The Formerly-Clunky Shoes You Never Thought You Would Want, Will Soon Be All The Rage

Ever since the start of the pandemic, we have not yet managed to depart from the permanent place that loungewear has taken in our wardrobes, and how that has shifted the trajectory of the fashion industry and what exactly people are buying. Although we are, at this point, very familiar with matching sweatsuits, knit loungewear, and lounge sets as key players in the fashion arena that is comfort-wear, this season we have a new, up-and-coming contender being added to the mix: comfort footwear. More specifically, the clog.

Previously, the image associated with clogs was not one that was particularly chic or fashionable. But now with the rise in popularity of wearing slippers or house shoes in public, clogs are on track to becoming one of the hottest (and most comfortable) shoes for Spring/Summer.

When I say clog I don't mean the traditional clog, commonly characterized by its heavy and blocky wooden platform. This modern iteration--- let's call it the comfy clog--- has swapped out the wooden platform for a flat sole, sometimes even featuring shearling or a fur-lined interior.

This new style is one that was perhaps most popularized by the well-known and loved brand for comfortable footwear Birkenstock, with their style called the Boston clogs. Since then, this style of shoe has been making its way around the fashion industry, with high end brands like Louis Vuitton and Bottega Venetta to affordable ones like Zara and ASOS putting their own spin on the most comfortable footwear trend of the season.

The great thing about the comfy clogs are that they are so versatile. You can dress them down with a cute matching jogger set if you choose to wear them at home. Alternatively you can throw them on with a pair of jeans (straight leg ankle length or cuffed, baggier jeans), a cropped ribbed tank top and a cute cardigan for a more pulled-together look that still maintains a casual feel.
